From Proto-Indo-European *pedóm, from *pṓds (the source of πούς (poús, foot)). Cognates include Sanskrit पद (padá, step, footstep, footprint), Old Norse fet (step), Old Armenian հետ (het, footprint, track), and Hittite 𒁉𒂊𒁕𒀭 (pēdan).
