From Proto-Indo-European *pléth₂os (breadth). Cognates include Sanskrit प्रथस् (práthas), Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀𐬵 (fraθah), Old Armenian լայն (layn), Welsh lled. See also πλατύς (platús, wide).
