From Ancient Greek τάρανδος (tárandos), of unknown etymology. Possibly from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Finno-Ugric *šardo, *šardō or *šordō. There doesn't appear to be any link to Ancient Greek ταῦρος (taûros).
