Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *kʷítis, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷéytis, from *kʷey- (to pay, avenge) (whence τίνω (tínō) and τίω (tíō)). Synchronically analysable as τίω (tíō) +‎ -σῐς (-sis).
