[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *túpťō, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp- (“to push, beat”).[1] Cognates include Sanskrit तोपति (tópati, “to hurt”), Latin stupeō and Old Church Slavonic тъпати (tŭpati).
