Etymology[edit]

From historical Бе́лая Русь (Bélaja Rusʹ, White Ruthenia or White Rus), from Old East Slavic Бѣла Русь (Běla Rusĭ, White Ruthenia or White Rus). Cognate with Belarusian Белару́сь (Bjelarúsʹ), later borrowed into Russian Белару́сь (Bjelarúsʹ) as an alternative name, now official. Compare with Ukrainian Білору́сія (Bilorúsija) and Білору́сь (Bilorúsʹ).
