Etymology[edit]

Evidently a third-person singular past II / subjunctive copulative (conjugated) form of the particle аф (af) (morphologically: аф (af) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ -ль ()), compare, for example, мораль (moraľ, he/she/it would sing ~ would have sung), see апак (apak) for suggested cognates.
