Borrowed from French banal + -ный (-nyj). Further from Latin bannālis, from Latin bannus (whence also English abandon). Further from Proto-Germanic *bannaną (whence also English ban). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (to speak).
