16th-century construction from obsolete бе́сный (bésnyj) +‎ -ва́тый (-vátyj), from Old East Slavic бѣсьныи (běsĭnyi), from Proto-Slavic *běsьnъ; see Russian бес (bes). Ukrainian біснуватий (bisnuvatyj) is a borrowing from Russian.
