From Proto-Slavic *bliscati, *blьščati, *blьstěti (“to shine, to radiate”), a reanalyzed ské-present of an earlier *blizti.

Etymology 3

Possibly a dialectal variant of synonymous пле́щя (pléštja) (from пля́скам (pljáskam, “to clap”)) or from a fussion of бле́я (bléja, “to bleat”) + врещя́ (vreštjá, “to groan, to whine”). Sometimes also compared with the outcome of Proto-Slavic *blęsti (“to blend words, to err”), despite objectively incompatible with it.
