From Proto-Slavic *blěščiti (to glance, to flash), a denominal inchoative of бля́сък (bljásǎk, glow, glamour) +‎ (-ja). Diachronically related to Etymology 2.

From Proto-Slavic *bliscati, *blьščati, *blьstěti (to shine, to radiate), a reanalyzed ské-present of an earlier *blizti.

Etymology 3[edit]

Possibly a dialectal variant of synonymous пле́щя (pléštja) (from пля́скам (pljáskam, to clap)) or from a fussion of бле́я (bléja, to bleat) + врещя́ (vreštjá, to groan, to whine). Sometimes also compared with the outcome of Proto-Slavic *blęsti (to blend words, to err), despite objectively incompatible with it.
