[edit]According to Chernykh, from Dutch waaier in the early 18th century (revocalized under the influence of веять (vejatʹ)), from waaien (“to blow”), from Middle Dutch wâyen, from Old Dutch *wāien, from Proto-West Germanic *wāan, from Proto-Germanic *wēaną, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁- (which is also the source of веять).
