[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gordina, equivalent to *gordъ (“enclosure; city”) + *-ina. By surface analysis, град (grad) + -ина (-ina). Cognate with English garden.
Balkan cognates include Aromanian grãdinã, Albanian gradinë and Romanian grădină.
