Inherited from Old East Slavic двьрь (dvĭrĭ), from Proto-Slavic *dvьrь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *dwírs, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwṓr, whence English door, Lithuanian durys, Latin forum, Sanskrit द्वार (dvā́ra).

Some speakers place a stress on the final syllable in genitive, dative or prepositional singular constructions with prepositions, such as "у двери́ (u dverí, by the door)", "к двери́ (to(wards) the door)", "без двери́ (bez dverí, without a door)", "из двери́ (iz dverí, (out) from the door)", "от двери́ (ot dverí, (away) from the door)", "до двери́ (do dverí, up to / until the door)" or (less commonly) "о двери́ (o dverí, about the door)".
