From Proto-Slavic *dьržati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰer- (to hold). Cognate with Latin firmus, Sanskrit धरति (dharati), Old Persian 𐎭𐎠𐎼𐎹𐎫𐎡𐎹 (d-a-r-y-t-i-y /⁠dārayatiy⁠/) and Lithuanian derė́ti.
