  1. to fall silent, to stop talking, to shut up
    • 1962, Ivan Ivanovitch Ohienko, Біблія або книги Святого Письма Старого і Нового Заповіту [Bible or books of Holy Scripture of the Old and New Testaments], Psalm 28, page 683:
      До Тебе я кличу, о Господи, скеле моя, не будь же безмовним до мене, бо коли Ти замовкнеш до мене, я стану подібний до тих, що сходять до гробу.
      Do Tebe ja klyču, o Hospody, skele moja, ne budʹ že bezmovnym do mene, bo koly Ty zamovkneš do mene, ja stanu podibnyj do tyx, ščo sxodjatʹ do hrobu.
      Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
