Inherited from Old East Slavic за мужь (za mužĭ, literally behind the husband), from Proto-Slavic *za + *mǫ̑žь.[1] Compare Russian за́муж (zámuž), Old Church Slavonic за мѫжь (za mǫžĭ), Polish za mąż, Slovene zamož.
