Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ęti (to take), reanalyzed after the verbs prefixed with *vъn-, *sъn- (vъn-ętivъ-nęti, sъn-ętisъ-nęti). The "й" at the front arose by analogy with йма́ти (jmáty), іма́ти (imáty).
