[edit]Etymology
[edit]мрак (mrak, “darkness”) + -о- (-o-) + -бе́сие (-bésije), from беси́ться (besítʹsja, “to rage”); calque of French manie des ténèbres (“mania of obscurity”), coined by Bestuzhev-Marlinsky in the 1810s and popularized by Belinsky. The suffix -бе́сие (-bésije) corresponds to Old Church Slavonic -бѣ́сїе (-bě́sie), used to translate Ancient Greek -μᾰνία (-manía) in religious terminology, such as in Old Church Slavonic идолобѣ́сїе (idolobě́sie, “idolomania”).
