[edit]мрак (mrak, “darkness”) + -о- (-o-) + -бе́с (-bés, “-maniac”); the suffix -бе́с (-bés) is cognate with беси́ться (besítʹsja, “to be furious”). Historically, derives from мракобе́сие (mrakobésije), which was coined by Bestuzhev-Marlinsky in the 1810s and popularized by Belinsky.
