Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic склабити сѩ (sklabiti sję, to smile), ultimately, from Proto-Slavic *skolbiti. Cognate with Old East Slavic осколобление (oskoloblenie, smile), Czech šklebit (to grin), ošklíbat sе (to grin), Slovak skľabiť sa (to grin), Old Polish skɫobiony. Distantly related to Old Norse skelpa (grimace, literally crack).
