[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic плита (plita), плифа (plifa), пленьфа (plenĭfa), плинта (plinta), a borrowing from Ancient Greek πλίνθος f (plínthos), with original reference to a four-sided stone ground in an ordinary Russian house set up as a fire-place; compare Latin tēgula and German Kachel for the semantic development. Doublet of пли́нтус (plíntus).
