From Proto-Permic *pu̇rni, frm Proto-Uralic *pure-. Cognates include Eastern Mari пураш (puraš, to bite) and Kildin Sami по̄ррэ (pōrre, to eat).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian пырны (pyrny).
