From Old Church Slavonic съврьшити (sŭvrĭšiti), from съ- (sŭ-) + връшити (vrŭšiti) from Proto-Indo-European *wers-. Also related to верх (verx, top, summit) and to Old East Slavic вьрхъ (vĭrxŭ), Proto-Slavic *vьrxъ. Literally, to top out.
