From Old East Slavic спѣшити ‎(spěšiti), Proto-Slavic *spěšiti ‎(to hurry), from *spěxъ ‎(haste), from *spěti ‎(to advance, ripen, hurry) + *-xъ. Equivalently from спех ‎(spex), from спеть ‎(spetʹ).
