[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic срѣдьнъ (srědĭnŭ), from Proto-Slavic *serdьnъ. Doublet of сере́дний (serédnij), the inherited East Slavic form. By surface analysis, среда́ (sredá) + -ний (-nij).
