Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic срѣдьнъ (srědĭnŭ), from Proto-Slavic *serdьnъ. Doublet of сере́дний (serédnij), the inherited East Slavic form. Morphologically, from среда́ (sredá) +‎ -ний (-nij).
