From Proto-Slavic *stьdza (path), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *stiga, from Proto-Indo-European *stigʰ-eh₂.

Slavic cognates include Serbo-Croatian стаза/staza, Slovene steza (path, walk) (absent in Bulgarian), non-Slavic ones: Lithuanian stiga, Ancient Greek στίχος (stíkhos), Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌹𐌲𐌰 (stáiga, way), German Steg (footbridge, gangplank).
