Russian

Etymology

Cognate with Old East Slavic стрьмление (strĭmlenije), Slovene strmẹ́ti (to rise) (tonal orthography), Czech strmět (to rise), Slovak strmieť (to rise), Polish trzmić (to stick out). Related to Proto-Slavic *strьmъ (steep). Per Vasmer, possibly derived from the vowel assimilation found in Proto-Slavic *strьmь, *strьmьnъ (compare стрём (strjom, fear), стрёмный (strjómnyj, scary)), from Proto-Slavic *strъm-.
