From Old East Slavic судьба (sudĭba), from судити (suditi, to juge) + -ьба (-ĭba) (synchronically, суди́ть (sudítʹ) +‎ -ьба (-ʹba)). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic сѫдьба (sǫdĭba).
