Ossetian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly related to Old Armenian պատուար (patuar, fortress), from an Iranian borrowing; compare Sanskrit प्रतिवार (prativāra, “warding off, resisting”), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬭𐬀 (pairiuuāra, “surrounding protection”). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *pati-vāra-. Classical Syriac ܦܕܛܘܪܐ (/pdṭwrʾ/, “fortification”) is borrowed from the same source.
