From Old East Slavic чухно (čuxno), from чудь (čudĭ) with an expressive suffix -хно (-xno). For the suffix compare given names Михно́ (Mixnó), Яхно́ (Jaxnó), Махно́ (Maxnó), Юхно́ (Juxnó).
