Etymology

[edit]

The initial element ӧ- (аб- in Komi-Zyrian) is related to Finnish epä-, Estonian eba- and Moksha аф (af). The latter element -вӧл ultimately derives from Proto-Permic *vɔ̇lni (to be), from Proto-Uralic *wole- (to be, exist).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian абу (abu), Komi-Permyak абу (abu) and Komi-Yazva обө (obå).
