Etymology

Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *m̥bʰos, through labial assimilation from *nébʰos (nom. sing.), *n̥bʰés-s (gen. sing.), despite formal difficulties.[1][2][3][4] Related to ամպրոպ (amprop, thunderstorm).

The sense of “sponge” is a semantic loan from Persian ابرک (abrak, little cloud; sponge).[2]

ամպ փոշւոյamp pʻošwoya cloud of dust
