Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Usually derived from *այր ‎(*ayr, fire) (which disappeared in competition with հուր ‎(hur)), from Proto-Indo-European *HeHter-, *ātr-, *h₁eh₂ter-, *eh₂ter- ‎(fire). Cognates include Proto-Iranian *ātar-, perhaps also Latin āter ‎(black, dark), Irish áith ‎(kiln), Palaic [script needed] ‎(hā-, to be hot).
