Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Usually derived from *այր (*ayr, fire) (which disappeared in competition with հուր (hur)), from Proto-Indo-European *HeHter- (fire), with Proto-Iranian *ātar-, perhaps also Latin āter (black, dark), Irish áith (kiln), Palaic [script needed] (hā-, to be hot) as cognates.[1][2][3]
