Declension

Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *sm̥- and *dóru (tree), assuming contamination with ծառ (caṙ). Alternatively, connected with Proto-Indo-European *H(o)nd-r- (rock; mountain) with a semantic shift “mountain” > “forest”; compare Middle Irish ond (stone, rock, mountain), Sanskrit अद्रि (ádri, stone, rock; mountain).
