Etymology[edit]

Calque from Ancient Greek ἀπόστροφος ‎(apóstrophos, accent of elision), from ἀπό ‎(apó, away) + στρέφω ‎(stréphō, to turn), which was translated as *ապադարձ ‎(*apadarj), from ապա- ‎(apa-, away; negative prefix) +‎ դարձ ‎(darj, turn), but written as ապաթարց ‎(apatʿarcʿ) because of the dialectal pronunciation adopted by the Hellenophile school. See բդեդ ‎(bded) for more examples of such a pronunciation.
