Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script?] (bāž), from Old Persian 𐎲𐎠𐎪𐎶 (bāji, tribute, toll), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂g- (to distribute, allot). The Persian descendant is باژ (bāž, tribute, toll, duty). Etymologically related to other Iranian borrowings: բաժանեմ (bažanem, to divide) and բաժակ (bažak, cup). Also related to Georgian ბაჟი (baži).
