Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Ačaṙyan, from Georgian ბოზი ‎(bozi, whore). That the Armenian word is borrowed from South Caucasian languages and not vice versa is confirmed by Laz ბოზო ‎(bozo, girl). For the sense development “girl” → “whore”, compare French fille ‎(girl; prostitute), German Dirne ‎(girl; prostitute), Russian девка ‎(devka, girlie; whore). Ačaṙyan remarks, that prostitutes were introduced into Armenia from Caucasus together with the word for them: compare how պոռնիկ ‎(poṙnik) is from Greek and կաւատ ‎(kawat) from Arabic.

Noun[edit]
