Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

As correctly noted by J̌ahukyan, a borrowing from Iranian *rax. Compare Sogdian rγʾh, Yagnobi рах(rax). Compare also related dialectal ռեխ(ṙex). J̌ahukyan then asks in a footnote, whether these are related to Avestan [script needed](sraxti, edge, corner), Persian رخ(rux, cheek) from Proto-Indo-European *srakʷ-(sharp-edged), a view taken by Bailey.

Noun[edit]

երախ ‎(erax)

  1. mouth (of humans); muzzle (of animals)
