Old Armenian

Etymology

Ačaṙyan leaves the origin open. For the sense development “splendour, brilliance” from “shadow” he compares Old English scima (twilight, gloom; ray, brightness).

According to Jahukyan we are dealing with a contamination of two sources: the sense of “shadow; veil, headcover” comes from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *skʰew-, a by-form of *skew- (to cover); the sense of “splendour, brilliance” is from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "ira" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E., compare Persian شکوه (šukōh, majesty, magnificence, dignity, grandeur).
