Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *sḱel-. Cognate with Lithuanian skélti (to cleave, split), Old Norse skilja (to part, separate), Ancient Greek σκάλλω (skállō, stir up, hoe), Latin sculpo (carve, engrave), Russian щель (ščelʹ), Hittite [script needed] (iškallāi-, to break, rend). The word is also attested as meaning “to flash”, which can refer to the sky being “rent”, or may just be an alternative form of ցոլամ (cʻolam). See also քաղեմ (kʻałem) and ցեղ (cʻeł).
