Etymology[edit]

The root is քաղ- (kʿał-), inherited from Proto-Indo-European *kʷl̥-. Related to ցելում (cʿelum).

Verb[edit]

քաղեմ (kʿałem)  (aorist indicative քաղեցի)

  1. to pick, to pluck up, to take away; to draw, to extract
    սկսաւ ոգի նորա քաղիլ ի նմանէ‎ ― sksaw ogi nora kʿałil i nmanēhe began to faint away
    լոյս իմ քաղի‎ ― loys im kʿałimy life is consuming
    քաղել զոգիս, զշունչ ուրուք‎ ― kʿałel zogis, zšunčʿ urukʿto keep in suspense, to amuse, to keep at bay
    քաղել բանս ի բերանոյ ուրուք‎ ― kʿałel bans i beranoy urukʿto catch something out of one's mouth; (figuratively) to get, to obtain his secret surreptitiously
  2. to gather, to gather together, to collect, to assemble, to amass
  3. to construct a building tapering from bottom to top
