From Proto-Indo-European *ḱyīno-. Cognate with Sanskrit श्येन (śyena, hawk, falcon, eagle, any bird of prey), Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀 (saena-, a mythical bird), Ancient Greek ἰκτῖνος (iktînos, kite).
