Arabic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From the root ء س س (ʾ-s-s).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
أَسَاس • (ʾasās) m (plural أُسُس (ʾusus)), non-standard plural أَسَاسَات (ʾasāsāt)
- foundation, basis, base
- tenet
- 2018 March 17, “الغارديان بعد مقتل منشق روسي جديد في لندن: "يجب أن ننظر جيدا ما خلف سحب أكاذيب بوتين"”, in BBC Arabic[1]:paraphrasing Jonathan Freedland on The Guardian: We have to see through Putin’s fog of lies, and take action now:
- ويقول فريدلاند إن "بوتين كحائز على الحزام الأسود في الألعاب القتالية لايرى في أساسات الديمقراطية مثل حرية التعبير وسيادة القانون إلا وسائد هوائية رخوة تصلح للتدرب عليها في تنفيذ الركلات".
- And Freedland says that “Putin, possessing a black-belt in fighting, doesn’t see in tenets of democracy like freedom of expression and rule of law anything but slack airbags fit for training to kick on them.”
- He has shown us how he sees, for example, the basic tenets of democracy – whether that’s free speech or belief in the rule of law, evidence and due process. To us, those may look like the firm pillars that hold up a decent society. But to a black-belt such as Putin they are rotten timbers, ripe for a good kicking and liable to bring down the whole edifice.
- tenet
