Etymology[edit]

Of uncertain etymology, but probably from Sanskrit चीन (cīna, China), itself usually derived from Old Chinese (*Dzin, Qin). It's one of the Arabic country names which require the definite article اَل (al-). See “Names of China” at Wikipedia.
