Etymology 1

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *bögürek, a diminutive of *bögür (kidney), whence بوگور (böğür, side, flank), based on the similar shape of the pastry to the organs. Probably unrelated to Slavic pierogi.

Etymology 2

From Middle Iranian *pūrag, a type of filled pastry, such as شکربوره (šakarpura, a sweet dough filled with almonds and pistachios). Cognate with Sanskrit पूरिका (pūrikā). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
