From Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zargōn) (Persian زرگون (zargun)), from Ancient Greek Συρικόν (Surikón, “red lead”, literally “Syrian”) (also found as Latin Syricum), syn. σάνδυξ (sándux). إِسْرِنْج (ʔisrinj) is the same word.
