Etymology[edit]

Disputed- either from Sanskrit श्रीनगर (śrīnagara), equivalent to श्री (śrī) + नगर (nagara) (city of goddess Lakshmi); or blend of سِرِیہِ (siriyi, sun) +‎ نَگَر (nagar, city), equivalent to सूर्य (sūrya) + नगर (nagara), "city of the Sun".
