From Middle Persian [script needed] (sak), from Old Persian [script needed] (çaka-), from West Iranian *spaka "dog-like, relating to dogs" (compare Median σπάκα (dog), Kurdish se, seg, and Old Armenian ասպակ (aspak, dog), a borrowing from Median), from Proto-Iranian (compare Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬁 (spā)), Pashto سپۍ (spëy)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit श्वन् (śvā́)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ.
