From Middle Persian [script needed] ‎(sak), from Old Persian [script needed] ‎(çaka-), from West Iranian *spaka "dog-like, relating to dogs" (compare Median σπάκα ‎(dog), Kurdish se, seg, and Old Armenian ասպակ ‎(aspak, dog), a borrowing from Median), from Proto-Iranian (compare Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬁 ‎(spā)), Pashto سپۍ ‎(spëy)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit श्वन् ‎(śvā́)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ.
