Etymology[edit]

فَعِيل (faʕīl)-type stative-verb derived from the active participle from the verb شَرِكَ (šarika, to share), from the root ش ر ك (š-r-k); literally, "sharer".

      qul ʔaraʔaytum šurakāʔakumu allaḏīna tadʕūna min dūni l-lahi ʔarūnī māḏā ḵalaqū mina l-ʔarḍi ʔam lahum širkun fī s-samāwāti ʔam ʔātaynāhum kitāban fahum ʕalā bayyinatin mminhu
      Say: Have ye seen your partner-gods to whom ye pray beside Allah? Show me what they created of the earth! Or have they any share in the heavens? Or have We given them a scripture so they act on unequivocal proof therefrom?
