Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sakal (beard); cognate with Azerbaijani saqqal, Bashkir һаҡал (haqal), Chuvash сухал (suh̬al), Kazakh сақал (saqal), Kyrgyz сакал (sakal), Turkmen sakgal, Uyghur ساقال (saqal) and Uzbek soqol.

  1. beard, facial hair on the chin, cheeks, jaw and neck
    Synonym: ریش (riş)
  2. whisker, that part of the beard which grows upon the sides of the face
  3. (nautical) dolphin striker under the end of a ship's bowsprit
